On April 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate to the country the Kochi water metro, a first-of-its-kind combination of a public boat service and a metro rail network.Thiruvananthapuram will host the first event.
The Kochi Water Metro, according to Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is a “dream project” for the region that will hasten Kochi’s growth and development.

According to Loknath Behera, managing director of KMRL and Kochi Water Metro Limited (KWML), the water metro would launch operations with eight electric-hybrid boats on two routes: High Court-Vypin and Vyttila-Kakkanad. Beginning on April 26, both the first and second routes will be operational.
With 78 boats and 38 terminals, the water metro will eventually traverse 76 km of the Kochi backwaters, serving three municipalities and six panchayats.
