Mitsubishi Electric India has decided to set up a new manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu, investing approximately INR 1,891 crores. The foundation stone was laid by Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday. Top officials of Mitsubishi Electric India entered into a memorandum of understanding with Guidance Tamil Nadu, an investment promotion agency of the state of TN, to set up the factory.

The air-conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility is expected to be built on a 52-acre plot of land owned by Origins by Mahindra in the Peruvoyal village, located in Gummidipoondi Taluk in the neighbouring Thiruvallur district.

Stalin formally laid the foundation stone for the manufacturing facility through video conference, along with the Minister of Industries Thangam Thennarasu, additional chief secretary industries department S Krishnan and Mitsubishi Electric India MD Kazuhiko Tamura, among others.

The INR 1,891 crore that Mitsubishi Electric India will be investing into the facility will be done through one hundred per cent foreign direct investment. The company stated that 2,000 jobs would be created, of which 60 per cent would be women employees.

The factory will implement many initiatives for carbon neutrality including the minimisation of carbon dioxide emissions through enhanced thermal insulation, use of highly efficient air-conditioning and water heating systems.

Officials stated that commercial production at the factory was expected to begin in October 2025 and capacity would initially stand at three lakh AC units and 6.5 lakh compressor units by December of the same year.
