Centre Imposes 20% Export Duty On Parboiled Rice

Centre has reportedly imposed a 20 per cent export duty on parboiled rice as the paddy production is under a cloud due to excess rains in Punjab and Haryana and deficient showers in east India.

According to the report, the move was aimed at maintaining adequate local stock and keeping the check under domestic prices.

The export duty hike imposed on 25 August will be effective till 16 October, the report said additionally.

It said for now the duty hike would be exempted only for parboiled rice lying in customs ports which have not been granted LEO (let export order) and are backed by valid letter of credit (LCs) before 25 August 2023.

With these curbs, the Centre has now imposed restrictions on all other varieties of non-basmati rice as well.

India has exported 17.8 million tonne of non-basmati rice and 4.6 million tonne of basmati rice in FY 2023. Out of the non-basmati rice exports around 7.8-8 million tonne was parboiled rice.
