CCPA Issues Notices To Amazon, Flipkart And Snapdeal For Selling Toys Without BIS Quality Mark

The consumer protection regulator CCPA has issued notices to e-commerce platforms Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal for allegedly selling toys without a BIS quality mark, as per PTI.

The government announced on Wednesday that 18,600 toys had been seized in the last month from major retail stores across the country, including Hamleys and Archies, at airports and malls.

Since 1 January 2021, the government has required toys to meet safety standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), a national standards-setting body.

According to the report, BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari stated at a press conference that they had received complaints from domestic manufacturers about the sale of toys that did not meet the BIS standard.

In the last month, BIS conducted 44 raids and seized 18,600 toys from major retail stores.

He said the raids took place at retail stores such as Hamleys, Archies, WH Smith, Kids Zone, and Cococart located in major airports and malls across the country.

Tiwari stated that retailers will face legal action under the provisions of the BIS Act.

Nidhi Khare, CEO of the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), stated that the agency has also issued notices to Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal for selling toys without a BIS quality mark.
