Amazon will lay off about 500 employees in India across its businesses including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and more. The job cuts will also affect human resources and support functions, according to multiple media reports.
The ongoing process of layoffs is part of Amazon’s previously announced 9,000 job cuts. In the first phase, the company made 18,000 job cuts.
As part of the restructuring, Amazon has shut down some seller onboarding functions in tier-2 cities such as Kochi and Lucknow.
In the company’s annual letter to stakeholders, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy mentioned the hard decision of laying off 27,000 employees because of cost cutting and other measures that he had to take for the growth of the platform.
Jassy had earlier said that Amazon had added substantial amount of staff in the past few years, but the macroeconomic uncertainties had forced it to choose cost and headcount cuts.
